The US Friends support the advancement of knowledge and learning at The University of Auckland and the exchange of academic knowledge, faculty and students between United States universities and The University of Auckland.
We are very sorry to learn of the recent death of Julian Robertson. Julian has been a true and generous friend and champion of Aotearoa New Zealand and of this University for many years. From his first gift almost 20 years ago, Julian and his Aotearoa Foundation have provided financial support for scientists, advanced research programmes and postgraduate students in the Centre for Brain Research, the Auckland Bioengineering Institute and Liggins Institute.
It opened new and fruitful areas of research into some of the most intractable and urgent medical and technological challenges of today. Of equal importance is the keystone philanthropic support for the strategic initiatives of these research centres, such as attracting and developing world-class, mid-career researchers from New Zealand and internationally.
Over the past decade, the Aotearoa Foundation Fellowships and Internships have given outstanding early career scientists at the University the security and space to explore their potential and undertake research that underpins future discovery and innovation and benefits science and society.
The University, its staff and students are very fortunate to have had such a close and meaningful relationship with Julian. It was more than just that of benefactor and recipient but a genuine and warm engagement. We will miss his keen interest in the University and New Zealand, as well as our many spirited debates and discussions.
