They can generate more brute force, but can't be used for foining. Power over subtlety. Personally, I'll take the sword. Because I trained with swords for most of my adult life. That aside, the sword is more versatile. An axe has plenty of options, and in the right circumstances against a heavily armoured foe, or someone with a shielf, for instance , some definite advantages, but the trade-offs are for me the fact that it's a slower weapon and harder to wield.
A sword is a bit more forgiving in that capacity. In the hands of a master, however, either one will kill an opponent quite dead. Personally and this is on the perspective of an armchair weponologist whose seldom raised his voice let alone any weapon, in anger, I'd go with a sword.
