GARY, Ind. During a press conference on Tuesday, Gary Police Chief Derrick Canon announced that a suspect had been taken into custody in connection with the shooting death of year-old Kia Tidwell, a Portage resident, who was killed after she was hit by a stray bullet during a shootout near the block of West 5th Avenue in Gary on Sept.
Authorities said Tidwell was hit as she was driving nearby and later crashed into a tree. She was pronounced dead at the scene and her death was ruled a homicide. Tidwell, who had been on the phone with her daughter at the time of the deadly shooting, was described as a beautiful person who worked hard and took care of her children.
During the conference, authorities announced that year-old Tedric Guy Jr. Guy has since been charged with one count of murder, three counts of attempted murder, and one count of criminal recklessness, according to Lake County Prosecutor Bernard Carter.
Carter added that Guy is also facing four counts of use of a firearm while committing a felony. If convicted, Guy could face 55 to 65 years in prison for murder, but Carter said the enhancement could increase the sentence by between five and 20 years.
