As we walked the kennels of Downey a significant number of dogs had boogery noses and were coughing. We started them on the "big guns" right away because seniors are so susceptible to pneumonia and have a hard time fighting it. Midge had bloodwork and x-rays performed at College Animal Hospital that looked clear and she was still eating so we administered her antibiotics at FFF with intermittent steam sessions.
Over the weekend Midge stopped eating so we hospitalized her at High Valley Veterinary Hospital to receive fluids and injections. On Tuesday she was discharged at close of business, but when she returned to FFF she looked pale, was coughing short breaths, and felt cold.
Her temperature was We rushed her to Animal Emergency Clinic of San Diego where she was in respiratory distress and her temp had dropped to They got her on oxygen and shot quick x-rays to show that she had very little lung capacity to breathe.
While the vet was describing the x-rays and we were authorizing hospitalization, Midge let out a scared little bark, collapsed, and passed away. Based on the pink tinged fluid that was expelled upon death the vet concluded that she likely died from congestive heart failure.
