In this paper, we propose the inclusion of formal knowledge representation techniques, based on Description Logics DLs and the Web Ontology Language OWL , in CIM-based conceptual modeling, and then we examine the benefits of such a decision. The proposal is specified as a CIM metamodel level mapping to a highly expressive subset of DLs capable of capturing all the semantics of the models.

Such a CASE tool framewor Abstract Common Information Model CIM has the goal of providing a suitable approach for modeling systems and networks using the object-oriented paradigm. In this document we illustrate how to map CIM onto an expressive Description Logics, called DLRifd, so as to obtain a rigorous logical framework for representing and reasoning on managed systems.
The document is organized as follows. The eXtended Markup Language XML has emerged in the Internet world as a standard representation format, which can be useful to describe and transmit management information.
However, XML formats alone do not give formal semantics to it. To solve this question, ontology languages based on the Resource Description Framework can be used to improve the expressiveness of the management information specifications. This paper presents an approach that uses an XML-based ontology language to define network and system management information.
