This body was organized in for the purpose of sanctioning competitive trail rides under a uniform judging system. The objectives of NATRC are: To stimulate greater interest in the breeding and use of good horses possessed of stamina and hardiness as qualified mounts for trail use; To demonstrate the value of selection and soundness of the proper horses for a long ride; To learn and demonstrate the proper methods of training and conditioning horses for a long ride; To encourage horsemanship in competitive trail riding; To demonstrate the best methods of caring for horses during and after long rides without the aid of artificial methods or stimulants.
Competitive trail riding should not be confused with endurance riding. The latter sport, also gaining in popularity, is actually a controlled race against time over a given distance of generally 50 to miles. NATRC provides both one-day, two-day and three-day rides with appropriate points toward the annual championships awarded the finishing horses.
Riders do not have to be members of NATRC to compete in a ride, but only members can compete for annual points. Daily mileage in the open division for horses over five years of age] is between 25 and 40 miles, depending on the steepness of the terrain, covered in six and a half to seven hours riding time. Novice division riders cover a shortened course of approximately 20 miles. The novice division is primarily for young horses aged four to five] and for new comers to the sport.
