The fire was reported at p. Saturday at a home on the block of 14th Avenue, but spread to several nearby buildings, according to police. Samantha Garcia, 24, of Belmar said she could see the flames from her friend's home two blocks away. Belmar Fire Department Chief Sean Pringle was at the scene Sunday morning as residents gathered what they could from the one apartment in a multifamily house damaged by the blaze. The fire started in shed behind one of the homes, then spread quickly to the surrounding buildings, Pringle said.
The fire damaged four homes in total, he said. One resident was injured after he went back into a burning home to rescue his pets and became disoriented, Pringle said. Two firefighters were also injured, he said. One suffered a shoulder injury and another suffered an eye injury, the chief said. First responders from several nearby towns also responded to the scene Saturday night, police said.
