Contributions to RACS committees on workforce management in Narrative report of Research, Teaching, and Clinical Contributions Research: Under my direction my research has pursued nine broad lines of investigation over the past 18 years: Arterial Grafting In Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery: This work further elaborated early evidence that showed that the left internal mammary artery had better long-term patency than saphenous vein grafts in coronary artery surgery.
Professor Brian Buxton, my mentor pioneered the concept of using both internal mammary arteries, which arguably would be better than one. Subsequently, we investigated the possibility of using other arterial grafts such as the radial artery in coronary artery reconstruction. Surgery for Heart Failure, Ventricular containment, Extra-cardiac Valve Repair: Surgery for heart failure started getting increased attention in the late s. I was an early adopter of ventricular reconstruction in Australia and published that experience over the years.
I helped develop and study the concept of ventricular containment or passive ventricular constraint, which seeks to prevent progressive ventricular dilatation as a means of halting the steady decline seen in heart failure.
Since then, I have evolved this concept to effecting correction of functional mitral regurgitation where the leaflets are normal through an external adjustable belt around the base of the heart, by the BACE Basal Annuloplasty of the Cardia Externally device. This is now in worldwide multi-center clinical trials. New techniques in minimally invasive valve surgery: This external approach with the BACE device is to treat Mitral and Tricuspid valve regurgitation without entering the heart.
