The Grand Tour might not be going out with a bang, but this pensive, melancholy last hurrah is bound to bring a tear to your eye. The death-defying stunts the likes of Jeremy Clarkson , Richard Hammond and James May have endured over the last 22 years on TV together have secured them their spot as the global leaders of motoring television.
Winning hearts with their unparallelled on-screen chemistry, the trio have amassed a devoted fanbase who have followed them from their Top Gear days all the way to their blockbuster Prime Video finale. From the start of One For The Road, the boys make it clear that they are saying goodbye on their own terms, opting to end the show while they're riding high, rather than running it into the ground.
Adrenaline junkies hoping for back-to-back explosions, screeching tyres and merciless pranks may be disappointed to hear that the philosophy this time around isn't 'more is more'. The death-defying stunts the likes of Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May have endured over the last 22 years have secured them as global leaders of motoring television.
That's not to say the show isn't without action - between hurling a Volkwagen Beetle off of a cliff to rafting in lakes full to the brim with crocodiles, there's still plenty of outrageous fun to be had, but truth be told, these aren't the moments that stayed with me when the credits rolled. I'll avoid too many spoilers here, but the mission statement is simple: the gang must traverse the width of Zimbabwe in three cars utterly unfit for the task - a Lancia Montecarlo, a Ford Capri 3-litre, and a Triumph Stag.
Given the rather patchy road network, they're forced to get inventive - at one point even attaching their cars onto railway lines and turning them into makeshift carriages. Naturally there are breakdowns and mishaps aplenty, but these feel playful rather than perilous. One of those most striking elements of the show is the breathtaking landscapes - captured with the world class cinematography we've come to expect. From the crashing waters of Victoria Falls to heaving mountains, Zimbabwe's beauty truly shines - and it's clear the hosting trio are captivated by it, often lost for words as they gaze wistfully out of their car windows.
