The year-old woman, who was homeless and warming herself in his car, was left with a swollen and bleeding face, according to the King County Sheriff's Office. If convicted as charged with first-degree rape, Edgar Raney would face a mandatory life sentence under Washington's "three strikes" law. He was convicted of second-degree assault and second-degree murder in King County in and has two armed robbery convictions from Alaska in , court record indicate.
A homeowner called about 5 a. A detective met the woman at St. Francis Hospital and found her bleeding from her head and forehead, according to the incident report. The woman's entire face was swollen and bloody and her right eye was nearly swollen shut and turning purple, the detective wrote. The woman told the detective that she had known a man named "Edgar" for about six months and was warming herself in his car in Tacoma.
He then drover her to an unfamiliar home in the block of 39th Place South near Auburn and took her into a garage filled with Christmas lights, boxes and bags, she claimed. After she used the bathroom and returned to the garage, the man later identified as Raney took his phone lanyard from around his neck and used it to strangle her, police reports say. The woman wasn't able to breathe at times as she struggled to resist him. Raney then allegedly threatened to shoot her and implied he had a gun in his pocket.
The woman says she never saw a gun, but could see an object that may have been a gun through his pants pocket. Raney reportedly proceeded to punch, kick and bite her.
He also dropped a car jack on her back, hit her with a crow bar and beat her head into the concrete, according to the Sheriff's Office. The woman ultimately heard Raney leave the garage in his car, reports indicate. She ran through a field and scaled a wooden fence to ask a neighbor for help.
