True crime documentaries have long been a fan favourite in TV genres. The Serial Killer Exhibition , located in The Vaults near Waterloo, provides the perfect eerie setting for this chilling experience.
I visited during its opening week, eager to gain a deeper understanding of the minds behind these infamous criminals. At the start, you're handed an audio guide that walks you through the crimes of each killer featured in the exhibition. The exhibition categorises killers into five distinct groups based on their motives. While I was initially excited, I found myself a bit disengaged as the exhibition progressed.
With so many killers covered, each story felt a bit surface-level. I left wanting more detail and even noted down names to research later through documentaries or films. However, there were a lot of fascinating artefacts on display. The exhibit also delves into torture methods. The exhibition is really long, so plan your visit carefully; I spent 90 minutes there and still only covered half of it.
I am a true crime fan, but it felt a bit overwhelming hearing about the most grim stories in such a short amount of time. I felt the exhibition was really respectful towards the victims, offering an examination of the psychology and methods behind these crimes, with a strong focus on education. It aimed to foster a deeper understanding of these criminal phenomena and promote discussions around lawfulness and justice. This is a subject that truly fascinates me, so I'm thrilled there's an entire museum dedicated to it in London!
