I am not an RF guy! So that much is good! Another thing to do is boost the power to the transmitter. These are usually tolerant of 12V but check your data sheet. When I built my pair, I found that initially I had more trouble with the antennas in then out. I could only get a range similiar to what you described. It turned out to be a bad connection between the antenna and the transmitter.
My first thought is that the breadboard may be causing some problems. Maybe I should check for AM specific antennas to see another approach besides a vertical wire. Let us know of your range tests. I think some of the ranges quoted for these products are a bit optimistic. I have tried putting a tone into a Tx and then walking around with the Rx listening for the tone, and certainly there are places where it can be heard faintly but other places it isn't.
Some more scientific experiments with a cro the other day show that the waveform distorts before audible distortions can be heard, and a square wave can distort into a biphasic wave. I don't think you are building anything wrong - it is just that the modules don't quite go as far as they say.
