Special Thanks. Your humble patience, pray. Gently to hear, kindly to judge, our play! It has been a long two years to go without the stories and characters on this stage that was built especially for Shakespeare.
So, our company feels a little exhilarated to be staging the Bard here once again. It seems particularly appropriate that we should renew our contract with the world of Shakespeare with Henry V , a play whose text forthrightly addresses its own theatricality and artificiality.
It begs the audience to use its imagination and apologizes for not recreating reality. But secretly, Henry V is proud of its storytelling and its rich imagery and language. The Chorus doth protest too much, methinks. At the same time, our deservedly celebrated Romeo and Juliet school matinee series has also returned Shakespeare to our stage.
The program normally performs for nine weeks, serving 12, schoolchildren each year. And those kids are cheering our production, just as they always have! After 15 months of not performing at all, and eight months of performing amid continual decision-making about socially-distancing audiences, canceling productions or performances, vaccine and mask protocols, school group protocols, and actor testing, we find ourselves in a seemingly endless loop of these judgments.
