Also sometimes known as Flaxseed or Linseed and in regions of the world with temperate climates is cultivated as a food and fiber crop.
This annual and sometimes perennial will flower from May to September with an abundant of flowers that will last for only a day. The lords of Lembeck, who held the water law in their territory, leased a whale mill driven by the water of the Hammbach in to a certain Mr. However, the mill was not the first building on this site, as it was built on older foundations. Sheep were mainly kept in the extensive heathland surrounding the area. The oil was obtained mainly from the rapeseed and linseed of the surrounding fields.
The operation of the oil mill was discontinued around for economic reasons. Botanical Garden , Frankfurt. This field of poppies near Royston in England stretched pretty near as far as the eye could see. They were there because the herbicide intended to suppress them didn't work.
Small blessings The linseed flax that were the intended crop make a lovely backdrop. In the 17th and 18th century there were thousands of windmills along the dykes; sawmills, dye mills, oil mills etc that powered the Dutch economy. The Zaanse Schans village gives you a picture of what it must have been like.
Not all the windmills and buildings started out in Zaanse Schans, many of them were moved here from the region as they came under threat from urban development across North Holland.
